What's So Special About Alpaca Wool?

September 13, 2017

Alpaca group

Alpaca fleece is soft, durable, and silky. The fibers are similar in size to our Merino wool, but they are mostly hollow, whereas sheep’s wool has pockets of air. It is the air pockets that trap heat, so alpaca fleece can be perceived as being warmer than Merino.

Alpaca fleece is also naturally water-repellent. Because it does not absorb Alpacas in snowwater at all, it retains its warmth even when wet. This all makes sense; after all, alpacas are from the mountains of South America, where they have been bred for thousands of years. Their coats have to protect them from the cold and the elements!

For those who may be sensitive to lanolin, which is naturally found in sheep’s wool, alpaca is a good alternative fiber. Like our Merino wool products, it is also non-flammable. Alpaca fleece also comes in 22 naturally occurring shades, as well as dyed options.

Recently, interest in alpaca fleece has grown, perhaps because alpaca ranching has a relatively low impact on the environment. There are numerous alpaca breeders in North America, Australia, and New Zealand.

We carry alpaca wraps and throw blankets, in addition to our Merino, Shetland, and Mohair products. If you are always cold, or if you need a hypoallergenic solution, an alpaca wrap or throw may be the ultimate accessory for you!
